A hard fought away win against the Alex
There’s nothing better than a hard working away performance, full of endeavour, capped off by a nitty gritty 1-0 win.
Thirty five per cent possession, nine shots and a higher XG than the opposition. These are not stats we’re accustomed to this season. So many times in the past have we come up against this type of game plan and fell short.
The opening half hour saw the Dons kick on where they left off on Friday, hunting down the opposition and not giving them a minute to breathe.
Crewe are a good side that have been well drilled by their manager Lee Bell . MK defended tremendously, throwing bodies in front of everything and playing on the counter. To put it quite simply we played on the back foot with a front foot mentality. The men from MK1 are showing that they can be irritating to play against.
Scott Hogan’s tireless pressing and fox in the box instincts were to be rewarded with a goal in the 28th minute. The former Birmingham striker capitalising on sloppy footwork from ex Dons loan goalkeeper Filip Marschall for a tap in.
Hogan has been criticised a lot this season and certainly hasn’t performed to his top form. The thirty three year old is capable of being one of the best strikers in the league if Warne can get him there. He reminds me of Shane Long in his prime when he plays like that. Hopefully those reading this remember him. The Dons head coach has a reputation for squeezing the most out of his players and Scott Hogan is certainly one who is capable of more.
It is impossible to not mention Craig MacGillivray, who was very solid in goal once again. Not giving Macca a new contract to be our number one next season would be absolutely criminal. His Ederson-esque kick to set Hogan free was nothing short of sublime. Our only other chance of note fell to Danilo Orsi, who curled just wide.
The one criticism of what was all in all a terrific away performance would be a lack of bodies in the box when in advanced positions. If we want to kill teams off our midfield are going to have to make more runs in to dangerous areas and get closer to the strikers.
