Lewie's farewell against the Mariners
Dean Lewington's farewell game couldn’t have started any better as the club skipper came out to a sea of orange in the stands at stadium:mk. A fitting tribute to our retiring captain.
Dons put on another solid defensive display against Grimsby Town. Craig MacGillivray had very little to do and put in a commanding performance. Lewington slotted seamlessly into the back three who were largely untroubled by the away side. The mariners did hit the back of the net once, fortunately offside was given cancelling out the deficit.
Paul Warne’s team were a little less gung ho from the start of this game but grew into it and started to create a few chances, especially in the second half.
The 51 year old's imprint on the team is becoming clearer from the stands game by game. There is an intent to get forward with most passages of play. Unfortunately too often at times nothing comes from it.
Our best opportunities came through Connor Lemonheigh-Evans who has become a real driving force in midfield since the managerial change. He is brave on the ball, tough in the tackle and works his socks off. Evans went close from range and nearly tapped in at the far post. Converting either of these chances would have been the perfect reward for his efforts.
From a stats perspective only four of the Dons fifteen shots were on target and they only successfully delivered five out of twenty two attempted crosses. This statistical data continues to highlight the key areas for recruitment.
Considering Warne is yet to have a transfer window, drawing with the side placed seventh going into this game does breed confidence that we are not far away from competing at the right end of the table.
Talking point
Earlier in the season Scott Lindsay signed Jay Williams because he felt we lacked bite in midfield. Since Warne’s arrival we’ve pressed well in the centre of the park with plenty of intensity and aggression. This change of attitude from the players possibly speaks more about Lindsay's relationship with the dressing room than it does his tactics. Especially, with the former Crawley Town man currently side lined.
